Customer Reviews

This box is great quality and a well-thought out design. It can hold a lot of junk in an organized manner. That's kind of the point right? I have owned mine for three years and I think it is great. There are several main points to be made about this box.
1. First thing to mention is Plano quality. This box is rugged, and while not as tough as my grandpa's old steel box it has still survived falling off a 6' rock and out of the truck onto the pavement.
2. Second is this box's versatility. It has customizable top compartments with removable dividers allowing for any number of concievable configurations. The blue clear top allows you to see your small gear before opening it, which is nice. The last slot on the top level next to the hinges is deeper than the rest of the top section, allowing you to store things like bottles of bait, my fillet knife or even large bulky bobbers if you like them.
The bottom section is equally customizable. It features three main compartments. The first is slotted on the sides to accept up to four Plano Plano® 3449-5 Utility Box organizer boxes. My box came with two, and I picked two more up to complete the set for about $3 each. The nice part of this is that if I choose to leave my main box at camp, in the truck or boat and go out with just a few things I need, I can take one or two of these in my cargo pockets, grab my rod and go. If you need a spot for more large gear, you can always remove the small boxes and use the space that way.
The next compartment has two removable lure organizers that hold lures upside down by the three-sided hook. Each holds 9 lures, for a total of 18. Or just like the other space, just remove the organizers and use the area for something bulky.
The third compartment runs the length of the box and is ideal for longer items like my fillet knife. It is not as deep as the rest of the lower compartments because it gives up some height so that the compartment above it on the top layer has a bit more depth.
3. Size. I have the smaller of the two boxes shown here on the Amazon page, and I find it to be the perfect size. It will still fit in my school-sized day pack if I want to carry it hands free with my lunch, yet it is big enough that I have most everything I could need in any one fishing trip.
Cons:
1. I think one of the most annoying things about the box is that if you don't remember to close the top lid before opening the bottom compartment you spill all your gear out of the top. Trust me that you won't do it more than once or twice before you wise up, but the trouble is your fishing buddy's learning curve! And they seem less likely to remember as it is not their box.
2. If you have a very large and extensive collection of fishing gear, this box alone will probably not hold it all at one time. I have now reached a point in my tackle where this is the case. If you are the type that needs to have everything you own with you at all times, you may need a different setup. However for me, by keeping a core set of items in the box, and trading out different Plano 3449 organizer boxes, I can quickly have all the items I need to do trout fishing on the river or bass fishing on the lake. Or fly fishing or whatever your need may be.
Price wise, I think I paid a few dollars less than the current price on Amazon, but I had to drive all over town to find it anyway, so with free shipping I think they are fairly priced, and I must say I would have paid more now that I know how much I like this box.
Hopefully this review has been helpful. Good luck with your gear selection and happy fishing!

I bought this box for my niece. She is fascinated by its versatility. She uses to keep her tools for Dentistry school.
